On Saturday, January 19th, 2002, the newly formed Florida Alliance for Peace and Social Justice will hold a Peace Rally, beginning at 1pm at Gasden Park, adjacent to MacDill Air Force Base. MacDill is the U.S. Central Command Headquarters for the war in Afghanistan, as well as for all present and presumed impending U.S. military operations throughout Central Asia, the Middle East and much of Africa.
A broad spectrum of individuals and organizations throughout Florida have formed the Florida Alliance for Peace and Social Justice in order to raise public awareness of, and opposition to, the Bush administration's war in Afghanistan and the dismantling of civil liberties with the U.S. The groups, listed below, operate upon the following principles of unity: 1) Support peace; oppose war, 2) Support social justice in the U.S. and around the world, 3) Support civil liberties, oppose racial and religious attacks and bigotry, 4) Support the universal human rights of all people, 5) Oppose all forms of terrorism, 6) Respect the ideological and political beliefs of the members within the alliance, and 7) Conduct Alliance activities in adherence with the principles of non-violence.
The Florida Alliance for Peace and Social Justice was formed in December of 2001 in order to organize the January 19th, 2002 Peace Rally at MacDill AFB. It is currently made up of organizations including the Florida American Indian Movement, the Tampa Bay Area-based Coalition for Peace and Social Justice, the state-wide Florida Coalition for Peace and Justice, the International Pople's Democratic Uhuru Movement, Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, Umbrella for Justice (PB County), Reality News Network, the Broward Anti War Coalition, and the Student/Farmworkers Alliance. Participants involved in organizing the MacDill Peace Rally also include members of the Quakers, the Green Party, the National Coalition Building Institute, Soulforce and Gulf Coast Women in Black.
The group has launched a web site to assist those interested in supporting the mobilization, at www.macdillpeacerally.org
